Educational ResourcesNPL has contributed work for the Designer Materials unit of the new Advancing Physics AS/A course, developed for OCR by the Institute of Physics. Click on the headings to view the applets. These versions of the applets run over the web, and do not require the Java Plug-In, as the versions on the CD did. However, they do require a browser capable of running Java 1.1 applets. The latest versions of Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer are capable of this. Polymer StretchingThis applet helps to visualise the changes going on within a polymer when it is stretched. Semiconductor ResistivityThis applet allows you to tinker with temperature, substrate, and doping in a simulated semiconductor, and discover what difference these parameters can have on the conductivity of the material. The Bike - Materials Selection ExerciseThis exercise shows the tricky business of compromise that all engineers face. In designing a bicycle frame, choice of materials can affect different properties of the bike in different ways. The task of finding the right material for the job can be awkward - are you after a cheap frame, or are your building a racing frame, with money no object? This suite of applets allows you to experiment with different tube cross-sections. |
